The Temple of Demeter
One of the most noteworthy edifices of ancient Naxos, constructed in Ionian Order, and dating back to the decade of 530-520 B.C. The sanctuary of Gyroula is considered to be one of the most important monuments of the island; it is made entirely of white marble, while its peculiar design reminds one of meeting places for the faithful, like the “Telestirio” of Elefsina. The temple was most probably dedicated to the worship of Demeter and Daughter (as attested to by the inscriptions); but additional clues referring to Apollonas have been found, and perhaps there was a successor object of worship on this same site.
The temple was converted, like the temple of Apollonas at Palatia, into a royal Church during the 6th century. Today, reconstruction of the temple has been completed, and a museum exhibition is in operation. The temple of Irion together with the Sanctuary of Gyroula is considered architecturally the forerunner of the Parthenon.
The temple had a square design with pillars at its frontage. Within the temple there was another series of pillars that supported the ceiling of the spacious closed-off hall, where Holy Mysteries ceremonies took place. Today, reconstruction is possible due to the concentration of architectural objects, even of benches on the land where building took place. The Temple of Demeter at Gyroula can be considered to be a unique monument to Ionian architecture.
